Day 2: Sacred Valley (Cusco – Pisac – Urubamba – Moray/Salineras – Ollantaytambo)

Description: Our first full day of riding! You will quickly appreciate the changes in scenery as soon as you leave Cusco and why the Sacred Valley is so high on everyone’s list to experience. The curvy roads towards Pisac pass through many small villages and even an animal refuge. Once we arrive in Pisac, we will discuss options over some delicious traditional empanadas of which Pisac is famous for (in addition to the Inca ruins and expansive artisanal market here). We will follow the Vilcanota river towards Urubamba and take a turn towards Moray (Inca agricultural terraces/concentric circles) and Salineras (outdoor artisanal salt mine). We can take the shortcut via Puente Pachar to Ollantaytambo – one of the most important and impressive Inca ruins outside of Machu Picchu. Ollantaytambo is also a quaint little town with its canals running through the streets and an amazing view to remind you of the Incas at every turn

  •  Distance: 200km / 124mi
  •  Time: 6h – 8h (approx)
  •  Lunch: Urubamba (not included)
  •  Dinner: Ollantaytambo (not included)

Day 3: Ollantaytambo – Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes

Description: After breakfast at the hotel, we set off for a day of amazing views. From Ollantaytambo, we start climbing to 4500masl (Abra Malaga) – the weather here is unpredictable (intense sun, rain, fog, hail). From the high point of the day, we start descending through a lush valley passing plantations of mangoes, bananas, oranges, and tangerines. We may cross paths with bicyclists taking advantage of the long, winding descent towards Santa Maria. The last 40kms/24mi is dirt-road with a few water crossings and sharing the road with impatient combis. Once we arrive in Santa Teresa, we leave the bikes and repack for an overnight in Aguas Calientes with comfortable clothes to visit Machu Picchu. A short transfer to Hidroelectric train station, 40 minute train ride, and we arrive in Aguas Calientes. Enjoy the evening exploring the streets but rest well for an early start to Machu Picchu

From there, the roads get more challenging as we enter the Cloud Forest – the mystical transition area between the Andes and the Amazon. This area is largely untouched and very remote – the perfect setting for a Lodge and a good sleep!

From there we continue for a quick visit to Pikillaqta, a pre-Inca village where some interesting structures are still on view. We continue to Piñipampa where you can see traditional brick factories at work and finally arriving at Andahuaylillas. There is a chance to visit the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas” where much of the gold-adorned church has been restored and the frescoes are now more vivid. Our route to Arequipa may cross paths with more condors too so be on the lookout. We arrive in Arequipa – the White City – named for the white sillar rock that has built much of its historical center and earning its place on the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
