Day 4: Santa Teresa – Puya de Raymondi National Park – Puente Pasaje

Remote Routes and the Chancas roads.

Description:This day marks our entry into one of the most remote and least-traveled areas of the itinerary. The route takes us toward the Puya de Raymondi National Park, home to one of the most impressive and iconic plants of the Andean world.

The ride combines secondary paved roads with off-road sections, crossing wide-open landscapes with minimal human presence. We arrive at Puente Pasaje, where we rest after a demanding yet authentic riding day deep in the Andes.

Day 5: Puente Pasaje – Laguna Pacucha – Abancay

Exploration Day: High-Andean Lagoon and Mountains

Description: We continue riding through high-Andean terrain until reaching Laguna Pacucha, a scenic mountain lake surrounded by rural communities and dramatic landscapes. This day offers a balanced mix of technical riding sections and panoramic roads.

We end the day in Abancay, capital of the Apurímac region, where we recover energy in an urban Andean setting.

Day 6: Abancay – Karkatera Tunnels – Abra Antaccassa – Huanicapa – Curahuasi

Day of Resistance – Overcoming the Devil’s Road.

Description: One of the most technical and visually striking days of the program. We ride through the Karkatera Tunnels, well known for their extreme geography, and cross Abra Antaccassa, surrounded by deep canyons and vast valleys.

The route continues through Huanicapa, before reaching Curahuasi, a traditional agricultural area famous for its anise production and its strategic location in the southern Andes.

Day 7: Humantay Lagoon – Cusco

Description: This  day of our Inca challenge tour takes us to contemplate the serenity of the Humantay Lagoon, a hidden gem located at the highest point of the Andes. We will rise early to begin our ascent to this beautiful high-altitude lagoon, where we will witness a spectacular view that will leave us breathless.

The path to the Humantay Lagoon will take us through steep trails and stunning landscapes, offering us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the Andes. Once at the lagoon, we will be amazed by its turquoise waters surrounded by imposing snow-capped mountains, creating a truly magical setting.

After enjoying the Humantay Lagoon, we will return to Cusco, where we will take the opportunity to explore some of the routes that we may have missed at the beginning of our journey. This will be a chance to discover new landscapes and experiences before returning to the city.

Itinerary

Day1: Transfer Lima – Miraflores Hotel

Description: Pick up from the airport to the hotel located in Miraflores. This day we also organize a meeting with the guide in charge at the hotel who will welcome you and explain the entire program, in order to have everything ready to start this adventure on wheels.

Day 2: Lima, San Bartolo – Paracas

Description: Pick up from your hotel to take you to the starting point in San Bartolo, located about 50 km from Lima. You will be given the chosen bike, you will practice to get a little familiar with the bike, we will do some tests until we are ready. Once everything is ready, the adventure will begin. We head south through the coastal desert of the Panamericana Sur through Chilca, Cañete, Cerro Azul and Pisco until we reach Paracas. We will leave our equipment at the hotel and explore the Paracas National Reserve with our motorcycles. Paracas is the oldest marine reserve in Peru with abundant marine flora and fauna, we can take the opportunity to do some off road routes enjoying the coastal and desert landscape that this area offers.

Day 3: Paracas – Huacachina / Ica – Nazca

Description: The day begins with a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands. The boat ride is the best way to appreciate the marine animals that inhabit the reserve and some of the archaeological sites visible from the shore. After the boat tour, we prepare ourselves and leave Paracas heading to Huacachina on our motorcycles, in Huacachina we will have a panoramic view of the oasis and the characteristic dunes of the place, we will also take the opportunity to do Buggies in the desert and some Sandboarding to finally appreciate the sunset in the desert, finally we head towards Nazca.

Day 4: Nazca – Chalhuanca

Description: After breakfast at the hotel, we head to the Nazca lines, where we will fly over (depending on weather conditions) the geoglyphs that can only be seen from the air. Nazca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient geoglyphs created around 400-650A.D. There are many different opinions about their purpose, and therefore a level of mystery has developed around the Lines. From Nazca, we leave the hot desert (300 masl) and start climbing towards Puquio and the Andes. We reach a high point of 4800 masl, the weather here is unpredictable (intense sun, rain, fog, hail). From the highest point of the day, we will cross the Pampas Galeras, the largest national reserve for vicuñas (the national animal of Peru, cousin to the llama/alpaca and with the softest animal fiber in the world). This is one of the most surprising and challenging routes in all of Peru. Lots of windy switchbacks and beautiful views.

Day 5: Chalhuanca – Cusco

Description: Early we start the second part of one of the most beautiful routes in Peru. We drive through wonderful valleys, endless curves and magnificent views. Once we land in Cusco, we will give you the best tips and suggestions on things to see and do.

Day 6: Sacred Valley (Piray Lagoon and Huaypo / Moray / Maras) – Aguas Calientes

Description: We start with the tour to the Piuray lagoon where we appreciate a beautiful landscape of the area, we will also visit the Huaypo lagoon that offers us a unique natural beauty for its flora, fauna and landscape, then we will go to Moray, where the Incas they built circular terraces for experimental agricultural use. Las Salineras de Maras is a large open-pit salt mine in a valley where the local community makes and sells various products related to artisanal salt. In Ollantaytambo we will go to the train station, we will board the train at 7:00 p.m. to the town of Machu Picchu (60 min) where we will spend the night.

Machu Picchu is a National Park and there are many walks within the site that you can do (there are additional costs for Huayna Picchu or La Montaña and they require prior reservation). We return to Ollantaytambo on the afternoon train, you will have time to visit the only living Inca city, which maintains the architecture, culture and traditions of its Inca ancestors.

Day 8: Ollantaytamb0 – Pisac – 04 Ruinas – Cusco

Description: After breakfast we start to find more Inca history and scenic passages of the Andes. We visit the archaeological center of Ollantaytambo and Pisac, being considered the 2 most important Inca sites along with Machu Picchu. There is a large artisan market in Pisac that is well known for its large and beautiful textiles made from alpaca wool and dyed in bright colors, in many cases hand-designed by the artisans themselves. We will leave for the Imperial City of Cusco, en route we will visit the most important temples and constructions of the ancient capital of the Incas (Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, Qenqo, Sacsayhuaman).

Day1: Cusco Historical Center, 4 Ruins (Sacsayhuayman, Qenqo, Pucapucara, Tambomachay)

Description: After the briefing about the Tour at 14h, everyone can get familiar with their motorcycle and take a scenic route through the Historical Center of Cusco and visit the four Inca ruins close to Cusco (Sacsayhuayman, Qenqo, Pucapucara, and Tambomachay). This route is an easy exit from Cusco and you will quickly get a sense of the surrounding hills, traffic, and how Peruvian drivers are!

Day 2: Sacred Valley (Cusco – Pisac – Urubamba – Moray/Salineras – Ollantaytambo)

Description: Our first full day of riding! You will quickly appreciate the changes in scenery as soon as you leave Cusco and why the Sacred Valley is so high on everyone’s list to experience. The curvy roads towards Pisac pass through many small villages and even an animal refuge. Once we arrive in Pisac, we will discuss options over some delicious traditional empanadas of which Pisac is famous for (in addition to the Inca ruins and expansive artisanal market here). We will follow the Vilcanota river towards Urubamba and take a turn towards Moray (Inca agricultural terraces/concentric circles) and Salineras (outdoor artisanal salt mine). We can take the shortcut via Puente Pachar to Ollantaytambo – one of the most important and impressive Inca ruins outside of Machu Picchu. Ollantaytambo is also a quaint little town with its canals running through the streets and an amazing view to remind you of the Incas at every turn

Day 3: Ollantaytambo – Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes

Description: After breakfast at the hotel, we set off for a day of amazing views. From Ollantaytambo, we start climbing to 4500masl (Abra Malaga) – the weather here is unpredictable (intense sun, rain, fog, hail). From the high point of the day, we start descending through a lush valley passing plantations of mangoes, bananas, oranges, and tangerines. We may cross paths with bicyclists taking advantage of the long, winding descent towards Santa Maria. The last 40kms/24mi is dirt-road with a few water crossings and sharing the road with impatient combis. Once we arrive in Santa Teresa, we leave the bikes and repack for an overnight in Aguas Calientes with comfortable clothes to visit Machu Picchu. A short transfer to Hidroelectric train station, 40 minute train ride, and we arrive in Aguas Calientes. Enjoy the evening exploring the streets but rest well for an early start to Machu Picchu

Description: We start the day returning along the 40 kms of dirt road towards Santa Maria and climbing to Abra Malaga (it’s different the other way around!). There is a new perspective, feeling of knowing what some of the curves ahead hide, and a little bit more comfort to enjoy the view. We return along the Vilcanota river towards Pisac. The hotel has a Jacuzzi/steam room!

From there, the roads get more challenging as we enter the Cloud Forest – the mystical transition area between the Andes and the Amazon. This area is largely untouched and very remote – the perfect setting for a Lodge and a good sleep!

Day 8: Pillcopata – Huancarani – Andahuaylillas

Description: After breakfast, we return to Paucartambo and leave Manu National Park via a different route. Amazing views of the Vilcanota river valley and ascend to Huancarani. We take the turn towards Laguna Huacarpay and the beautiful view from above the lake. From there we continue for a quick visit to Pikillaqta, a pre-Inca village where some interesting structures are still on view. We continue to Piñipampa where you can see traditional brick factories at work and finally arriving at Andahuaylillas. There is a chance to visit the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas” where much of the gold-adorned church has been restored and the frescoes are now more vivid. We relax at a private country house with fireplace, a few dogs, and a grand sense of feeling at home

Day 9: Andahuaylillas – Chivay/Colca Canyon

Description: We take the alternative route towards Chivay and Colca Canyon – where you will get a lot of dirt road experience and more a feeling of what the remote Andes feels like. There are some mining activities in this region and you will see what a more typical Andean lifestyle is like herding animals, working the land, and few basic services. You will be rewarded as we approach Colca Canyon – more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States (4160m)

Day 10: Colca Canyon – Arequipa

Description: We wake early to travel to the Mirador del Condor to see the first flight of the day of the impressive Andean Condor – with a potential wingspan of 3.2m! Our route to Arequipa may cross paths with more condors too so be on the lookout. We arrive in Arequipa – the White City – named for the white sillar rock that has built much of its historical center and earning its place on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. El Misti, one of 3 active volcanoes gracing the skyline on Arequipa, always casts a beautiful image on the city

Day 11: Arequipa Free Day

Day 12: Arequipa – Puno

Description: We leave the El Misti and head towards Puno, on the edge of Lake Titicaca – the largest lake in South America and the highest navigable lake in the world. There are many floating islands with unique settlements which have their own culture, customs, and transportation systems. Tour to the Sillustani ruins and the Uros island is included

Day 13: Puno – Cusco

Description: We say goodbye to Lake Titicaca and take the route back to Cusco via Juliaca, La Raya, and Sicuani. There are a few archaeological sites along the way (Raqchi) and a beautiful old church in Huaro. The last stretch towards Cusco will bring us through Oropesa (the bread capital of Peru) – famous for their big round breads, Tipon – the Templo del Agua, and Saylla. We will battle a bit of traffic to finally arrive back at Peru Moto Tours headquarters!
